21 June 2024

This publication explores the synergy between traditional ecological knowledge and modern scientific approaches in the effective management of Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TCAs) in the Southern African region. The study analyzes specific cases in SADC, highlighting how the incorporation of traditional conservation practices can improve biodiversity protection strategies and promote sustainable development.

The research addresses:

The role of indigenous knowledge in identifying critical ecological corridors.
Innovative methods for reconciling conflicts between local communities and conservation objectives.
Assessing the impact of climate change on ACTs using both scientific data and traditional observations.
Policy proposals for inclusive governance that equally values local and scientific expertise.
This work offers practical recommendations for protected area managers, policymakers and conservation organizations towards a more holistic and culturally sensitive approach to managing ACTs in Southern Africa.
