PRESIDENT CHISSANO AND GOVERNOR MUSSANHANE ATTEND THE LAUNCH OF THE BOOK ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: THE PATH TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

23 and 26 de July 2024

On 23 and 26 July 2024, the cities of Maputo and Inhambane witnessed the launch of the book Environmental Management: The Path to Achieving Sustainable Development, a genuinely Mozambican book written by Nunes Tomás Mazivile, better known as Mazivila. The book, which has eight chapters and more than 360 pages, is prefaced by Prof Dr Jorge Ferrão, the Chanceler of the Pedagogical University, where the author graduated.
During the presentation of the book in Maputo, the former President of the Republic of Mozambique, Joaquim Alberto Chissano, pointed out that, initially, the message about environmental management was not well understood in Mozambique. Chissano recalled that the country, as a member of the United Nations, was inspired by the principles of the Declaration of the first Conference on Environment and Development, held in Stockholm in 1972, which advocated the need for "Each country to establish its own standardsˮ. In response, Mozambique incorporated the "Right to the Environment" into the 1990 Constitution.

Chissano also mentioned the creation of the Ministry for the Coordination of Environmental Affairs (MICOA) in 1994, now under a new name. He also encouraged Mazivila to continue contributing with knowledge to inspire Mozambique and the region. Joaquim Chissano took the opportunity to reflect on the readiness of Mozambican society to face environmental impacts imposed by challenges such as climate change, inadequate settlements and forest destruction, among others.

Presiding the event in Inhambane city, the Governor of Inhambane Province, Eduardo Mussanhane, praised the quality of Mozambican education and emphasised that the book is the first written by a Mozambican for Mozambique and Southern Africa. He congratulated and commended Prof Dr Jorge Ferrão for his support for the project and said that the book has remarkable technical and scientific value.
